One thing that is true about Salt Lake City is the city is both beautiful and well-organized. You can see it from the city streets being oriented in their grid-like fashion. The efficiency this makes for the city is tremendous compared with other cities with confusing roads winding all over the place.
Managed print is similar. It takes something that could be chaotic and messy, and creates an organized structure with rules put in place.
If you think of print as traffic, there are potential sources of bottlenecks. Like a city, there are certain areas of the office where you don't necessarily want much foot traffic. When you build out your print plan, it is much like the work a city planner does (at much smaller scale, of course).
When planning out your managed print strategy, there will be some things we have to consider. What is the amount of print traffic going to each printer? How many printers are there to handle the traffic? What are people's intentions when they use a printer? Are there any printers that are absolutely critical for the company to function? What is the cost of maintaining the print infrastructure? Is there a way to reduce any of the cost without also reducing the service quality or access for the employees?
The other method of dealing with print, which we don't suggest to those with a print fleet, is an unmanaged approach. Then toner is purchased when it runs out, and there isn't an analysis of whether each printer makes sense for the place it holds. This is less costly if there are only two or three printers (like how city planning streets isn't as critical if you only have two or three streets in a town.) The more printers you have, the more managing the printers makes sense to get the most out of your technology.
